A very strange little book, but I had tears in my eyes when it was over—it's a weird, sad story.

A lady becomes a fox—just like that—and though nobody witnesses it (her husband was looking away at the instant), the change is immediate, and the fox can understand English and play cards, so we accept it as truth. It is told from a narrator's opinion of the husband's point of view, as he copes with a wife who is a fox, and as the story unfolds, a wife who increasingly becomes foxlike.

My mother (who is keen to ask me what the theme or message of a book was, thinking that's something they all must have, based on her chosen diet of books) would probably like this one. I suspect there's a theme or message there for the taking. I try not to worry about such things. But it held my interest, got extra points for being utterly strange, I felt the author played fair given the premise, and it moved me.

It's freely available at Project Gutenberg, with the original illustrations—I finally broke down and learned how to download-and-transfer-to-Kindle, so I could read this in bed, and it couldn't have been easier once I identified my Kindle folder! Luddites, give it a try.

Richard en Silvia zijn pas getrouwd, ze hebben het fijn. Richard houdt erg veel van Silvia. Op een de verandert Silvia tijdens een wandeling in een vos.
Richard zorgt voor haar en ziet er op toe dat niemand iets in de gaten krijgt van deze vreemde situatie.
Hij wast en kleedt haar, ze spelen spelletjes en slapen samen in het bed.
Langzamerhand verandert Silvia echter in een echte vos, ze wil niet meer aangekleed zijn en ze wil de wijde wereld in. Richard probeert haar met al zijn liefde en een beetje dwang bij zich te houden, maar uiteindelijk laat hij haar gaan, ze wordt zo ongelukkig. Na een tijd komt ze terug en neemt hem me het bos in, naar haar nest met kleine vosjes. Richard werpt zich helemaal op als peetvader, geeft de kleintjes namen en speelt met ze. Hij ontmoet ook nog de vader vos. Uiteindelijk als de welpjes volwassen zijn gebeurt er iets verschrikkelijks. De jagers die in het bos zijn doen Silvia, Richard raakt zwaar gewond.
Een prachtig, heel ontroerend, mooi en liefdevol geschreven verhaal. Het is al uit 1922. ( )

Una parella enamorada que després de la transformació increíble de dona en guineu inicia un procés d'una relació diferent basada en l'amor, però de mica en mica la natura salvatge va allunyant la guineu del seu espós. Ell està disposat a modificar tota la seva vida, a oblidar els seus modals de perfecta correcció anglesa per apropar-se a ella, disposat a fer-ho tot per no perdre-la. Però evidentment la natura salvatge és més forta que els convencionalismes socials. ( )
