I don't often read historical fiction so was surprised at how much I enjoyed this story of two orphan sisters in 18th century Venice. The story begins in the Pieta, an unusual orphanage oriented towards musical training at the highest level where Chiaretta and Maddalena, abandoned at birth, must find their way in a world of highly restricted choices for women. Enjoyed the re-imagining of the role of Vivaldi in the Pieta, and insights into marriage - Venetian style. ( )

When two young sisters are abandoned on the doorstep of the Pietà in Venice in 1695, they enter the care of an extraordinary institution: part foundling hospital, part secular convent, and part conservatorio. The girls of the Pietà learn to love God through the medium of music, whether by playing an instrument or by singing in the weekly Masses, which draw admiring crowds to the chapel beyond the grille that prevents any of the performers being seen. And the soloists of the Pietà become stars, their talents as well-known as any opera singer’s, even though they must remain screened away. Of these two abandoned sisters, one, the playful and exuberant Chiaretta, will turn out to have a voice that wins her legions of admirers. The other, Maddalena, looks in vain for an instrument that sparks the inner core of her being. But then she discovers the violin, at around the time that the Pietà hires a young priest to help with giving lessons: a virtuoso violinist and budding composer with flaming red hair, named Antonio Vivaldi...

I not only enjoyed this novel, but like all good historicals, I learned a lot about a time and place that I knew nothing about. I read this book because my father, gone now for 5 years, loved Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" and the music was part of my childhood background. But I found it fascinating to discover that in 17th-century Venice, bastard daughters of the nobility [from their courtesans] were raised in convent-like music academies, but they were not sworn to poverty or chastity. Corona's writing totally brings this obscure culture to life, made even more interesting by its female pov. ( )

Love Venice and Vivaldi, but was extremely disappointed in the book. I had hoped the book focused on Vivaldi and on di coro del Pieta, but instead it focused on two orphaned sisters, Maddalena and Chiaretta. And while Chiaretta sings with the choir and Maddalena is a prodigy of Vivaldi, their characters seemed to overshadow what I was looking for from the book. ( )

‘De zusjes Maddalena en Chiaretta worden als vondeling achtergelaten op de trappen van het Ospedale della Pietà, het klooster dat wereldberoemd is om zijn muziekopleiding en concerten. De oudste, Maddalena, legt zich al op jonge leeftijd toe op het vioolspel en de drie jaar jongere, opstandige Chiaretta blijkt over een prachtige zangstem te beschikken. In het Pietà ontmoeten zij de beroemde componist en priester Vivaldi, die zijn Vier Jaargetijden voor het klooster heeft geschreven. Zijn verhouding met de kerk is grillig; hij komt en gaat naar gelang zijn temperament en financiën dat toelaten. Maddalena’s gevoelens voor de componist groeien naarmate zij meer met hem samenwerkt. Voor een vrouw in het klooster zijn er echter maar twee opties; non worden of trouwen, en dus zweren nooit meer in het openbaar te zingen. Terwijl Maddalena kiest voor haar viool en het kloosterleven, trouwt Chiaretta met een man uit een belangrijke aristocratische familie en wordt uiteindelijk een van de machtigste vrouwen in Venetië.’

Het verhaal begint met de twee kleine meisjes, Chiaretta nog maar een baby, die in het klooster gebrandmerkt en zo geregistreerd worden. Het harde leven wat voor ze volgt bestaat uit zwijgen, bidden en nog meer bidden. Hun worsteling met dit strenge regime, sleept je direct mee het boek in. Soms wordt het lezen bemoeilijkt door de vele Italiaanse en Latijnse termen die voorkomen in de tekst; zoals ‘figlia’ (leerlinge van het klooster), ‘burchiello’ (kleine boot die op de vele kanalen van Venetië gebruikt werd) of ‘parlatorio’ (bezoekruimte in een klooster). Maar achterin het boek staat een verklarende woordenlijst en op den duur raak je gewend aan de verschillende termen die bestaan voor de hoofdzusters en de leerlingen van het klooster en hun muzieklessen.

Naarmate het boek vordert, groeien de twee zusjes op. Het is boeiend om te lezen hoe hun carrière vordert in het Pietà en hoe ze zelf groeien als persoon. Het zijn allebei lieflijke personages om over te lezen, waardoor je ook meer van ze wil weten en je dus ook door blíjft lezen.

Het minpunt van het boek is dat er hier en daar wat losse eindjes blijven bestaan. En aan het einde van het boek gaat de tijd wel heel erg snel en zijn de zusjes van 20 jaar oud ineens 40 jaar oud.

Maar het blijft van begin tot eind een boeiend verhaal. Een lief verhaal over een sterke band tussen twee zussen en hun beider levens, ook al kiest ieder een heel andere (levens)weg. En je steekt er als lezer nog iets van op. Het verhaal is niet waargebeurd, maar heeft wel een hoop elementen in zich die een waarheidsgetrouw verhaal vormen. ( )
