Koran is the central religious text of Islam, a revelation from God (Allah). The Koran was orally revealed by God to the final prophet, Muhammed, through the archangel Gabriel, incrementally over a period of some 23 years, beginning in the month of Ramadan, when Muhammed was 40.
EncompassedRunner: Approaching the Koran without any background familiarity with Islam, particularly the traditions of Muhammad or Islamic history can result in the reader feeling confused, as the Koran is not arranged chronologically or topically, and for the most part there is not enough context in the Koran to give meaning to vague verses or to clarify seeming contradictions. I like the notes explaining important translation details and expanding on the backgound of many verses in my edition. The appendixes with additional information about topics as the Abbreviated Letters as great too. ( )
Interesting to read right now given the political climate. Although there are a few "kill the infidels" type passages, overall the tone is one of giving oneself up to the one and only God, although the consequences of not doing so will result in hellfire and brimstone, etc. Several passages in practical day to day living as well -- multiple wives (only if they can be treated equally - yeah, right), how to divide property after death, when and how divorce is allowed, etc. Overall, though, it does not condone anything remotely like 9/11. Actually the Qur'an calls for a fiery and miserable afterlife for Osama and his kind. ( )
Everyone should read this at least once. If you don't like it fine, but no one can deny that it is a beautiful piece of writing. Whether you agree with what it says or not. ( )
