Unfortunately this one was more miss than hit ( ) Crimini (2008) published by Bitter Lemon. This is a collection of crime stories from Italy. Short, sweet, ranging from a comedy partnership that goes bad, a young man on the run from the cops who holes up with the strange woman who lives below his mother’s apartment, and even a very poorly planned kidnapping. There are nine tales of criminal intent ranging from sad to hilarious. I especially like the opener, You Are My Treasure Chest. This is a story of a plastic surgeon, about to be arrested for drugs, who makes a fledgling starlet literally into his treasure chest. All the stories are about corruption to some degree or another. They are fitting for their surroundings of the ancient world and the gradual decline of all things from the pure into the corrupt. All offer a delightful insight to the Italian mindset and how it differs from the American, and also how similar it is to our own. Finally, it is not the noir that we know of, that we in the states mean as noir. Sure, these are dark stories, but they have more of a heart to them than, say, a Jim Thompson, Chandler or Hammett story. This is a nice change of pace for the average American crime reader. It is always good to get a different view to what you might think of as commonplace material. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Praise for the authors: "Niccolò Ammaniti has written a deft masterpiece without a false note."--Michel Dibdin,Guardian "The Italy of Massimo Carlotto is a different world entirely, a dangerous setting for serious crimes committed by cruel men."--The New York Times "Andrea Camilleri writes with such vigor and wit that he deserves a place alongside Donna Leon, along with the additional advantage of an insider's sense of authenticity."--The Sunday Times "A stunning tour de force from Carlo Lucarelli."--The Sunday Telegraph Italy's best crime writers present nine gripping, often darkly humorous short stories with settings ranging from Milan to Palermo by way of Rome and even Guadeloupe. The mafia is not just Sicilian but also Albanian, Croatian, and Chinese. These new stories are by Niccolò Ammaniti, Andrea Camilleri, Massimo Carlotto, Marcello Fois, Carlo Lucarelli, and others. These brilliant tales do not feature psychopathic cannibals or obscure, power-mad sects but ordinary criminals: a drug-addled cosmetic surgeon, inept blackmailers, and various other low-lifes lusting after easy money. Italian crime writing is replacing that of Scandinavia as the fastest growing in the genre. The huge success ofI'm Not Scared by Niccolò Ammaniti followed by the Gabriele Salvatore film of the same name took the United Kingdom and the United States by storm. Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalban series (with seven popular titles in English so far), Carlo Lucarelli's novelsAlmost Blue andCarte Blanche, and Massimo Carlotto'sThe Goodbye Kiss are further evidence of this surge.
