2535. It is the first, desperate days of the Human-Covenant War, and the United Nations Space Command has enacted "the Cole Protocol" to safeguard Earth and its inner colonies from discovery by its merciless alien foe. Many are called upon to rid the galaxy of lingering navigation data that could potentially reveal the location of Earth and ensure the destruction of humanity. Among those tasked with eliminating any trace of such dangerous information is Navy Lieutenant Jacob Keyes--now saddled with a top-secret mission by the Office of Naval Intelligence...one that will take him to a corner of the galaxy where nothing is as it seems. Out beyond the Outer Colonies lies the planet Hesiod, a gas giant surrounded by a vast asteroid belt. As the Covenant continues to glass the human-occupied planets near Hesiod, many of the survivors, aided by a stronghold of human insurrectionists, are fleeing to the asteroids for refuge. They have transformed the tumbling satellites into a tenuous yet ingenious settlement known as the Rubble--and have come face-to-face with a Covenant settlement of Kig-Yar...yet somehow survived. News of this unlikely treaty has spread to the warring factions. Luckily for the UNSC, this uneasy alliance is in the path of the Spartan Gray Team, a three-person renegade squad whose simple task is to wreak havoc from behind enemy lines in any way they see fit. But the Prophets have also sent their very best--an ambitious and ruthless Elite whose quest for nobility and rank is matched only by his brutality...… (plus d'informations)

Never played Halo (did play Marathon), but it's a good read. ( )

Dad gave me this when I visited. Probly not one I'd normally pick up. Will see if it's worth grabbing the rest for the Kindle ( )

Of all the Halo books I've read to date (The Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, Ghosts of Onyx, Contact Harvest, Evolutions) this is the only one I gave up on and didn't finish. The others were pretty much amazing (with the exception of The Flood, which was nothing more than someone writing down what someone else playing Combat Evolved was doing); this one was just a grind for me. The cole protocol is an action pack thrill ride that constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat. You are constantly wondering if the characters are going to survive or if they are going to meet a grissly end. All together I think it is a great book that lives up to expectaions of halo books.

If you do not care about or follow the Halo storyline, than this book may not deserve five stars, but for me it was great. The Cole Protocol was a solid read, and a happy return to good storytelling. My expectations for this book were very low. The other two books in the series not written by Eric Nylund have left a bad taste in my mouth, but this was refreshing.

My only complaint is that the books seem to be losing focus of the end in the big story. We have all played the game and rounded the series off, but having a book to coincide with the finish would be greatly desired. ( )
