Dans ce récit passionnant et passionné, Irving Stone, en une fresque éclaboussée de couleurs, fait revivre toute l'histoire de la Renaissance italienne, de la Florence de Laurent le Magnifique à la Rome de Jules II, de Léon X et de Clément VII. Mais avant tout il réussit à saisir de l'intérieur une âme d'artiste, blessée par l'incompréhension, en proie à des joies et des affres inconnues de la plupart des hommes, enfermée dans l'orgueilleuse solitude du génie. Un roman tout en puissance et en frémissements, à l'image de son héros, Michel-Ange.
