Definitely some interesting lessons learned, but I expected and they should expected this buying a house in a country like Morocco, where they don’t speak the local language and are buying a a historically significant section of the city. Sadly after a while it seemed like a text book on renovating a house in Morocco. There wasn’t enough about Fez and I never felt I got to know many of the characters they had to work with. ( ) I enjoyed this book. It was interesting to see Fez through the eyes of this Australian journalist who bought an old house there and renovated it. On the other hand, the author only describes interactions with officials and workers, not many of the ordinary people, and most of the action happens in the house rather than around the city. There are a few brief side trips to interesting places in the area, but almost all with other foreigners. Still, the story of working on a traditional Moroccan house was neat. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

When Suzanna Clarke and her husband bought a dilapidated riad, or traditional courtyard house, in the ancient Medina of Fez, their friends thought they were mad. Located in a maze of donkey-trod alleyways, the house was beautiful but in desperate need of repair. Walls were in danger of collapse, the plumbing non-existent. It was a state common to many of Fez's exquisitely crafted houses, which were falling to ruin for want of local funds to restore them. Or worse, they were being bought by foreigners and modernised. With a view to living there semi-permanently, Suzanna was determined to restore the riad to its original splendour. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
