Collected Stories 2 is an omnibus edition for four previously-published short story collections by Ruth Rendell: The New Girlfriend (published in 1985), The Copper Peacock (1991), Blood Lines (1995) and Piranha to Scurfy (2000). As ever with such collections, one person's favourite stories might not match another person's choices, but the writing itself is the reason to read them all. Rendell has had a long and very distinguished career as a novelist, but she also excels at shorter lengths as well, particularly with respect to showing the underlying horror in ordinary lives and experiences. I find this anthology to be best read in blocks rather than all in one go, simply because there are so many stories included, but any fan of short stories will be well served by this book, however they choose to consume it.
