It was heartfelt and talks about what it really means to be a friend to someone. I had to read this book specifically for an event that my library is going to be hosting and I'm glad that I read it. Humphrey was a cute protagonist and I loved seeing things through his point of view as the classroom hamster. This is a great and fun book I used to read aloud to the students at the end of every day (3rd grade). It can be used for deeper discussion on topics like accepting others and friendship. It can also be used to teach concepts such as onomatopoeia, alliteration, and rhyming because the author uses a lot of these. Humphrey, the hamster is returning to class room number 26 for the first time after the winter break. He learns that the class has completely changed since he has been gone. All the chairs have been moved, the bulletin board has changed, and there is a new student in class. These will be minor changes in comparison to the change that happens when new pet frog, Og, comes to class. Humphrey learns a lot about friendships in this short novel. He experiences rejection and jealousy when the entire class seems to love the new class pet and they ignore him, even Og ignores him. Soon, the students are allowed to take Humphrey home for weekend visits. Humphrey learns a lot about being a friend. This book features Humphrey’s Guide to the Care and Feeling of Friends, a summary of Humphrey’s experiences.
