Gus and Grandpa at Basketball by Clauia Mills
Listened to this book and it's about Gus who likes to practice and hear some noises.
Game noise is so different, SO loud. Grandpa explains some things and gives Gus some tips.
Gus likes the yellow jersey and hope he can do well to get a trophy.
Grandpa shows him how his hearing aid works-he can turn off noises...
Cute story and love that grandpa comes to the rescue.
Other works are also highlighted.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device). ( )

Gus loves to go to basketball practice, but he doesn't feel the same way about going to the game. Gus never gets a basket during the game, and he feels like he is letting his team down. When he visits grandpa's house, he discovers that when things are getting too loud, grandpa turns off his hearing aid. Grandpa suggests that Gus turn off his ears during the games so that he can concentrate. Gus goes to the final game, and does what his grandpa suggests. Gus is able to get in the zone, and he finally makes a basket! Everyone is so excited, but Gus is more excited.

I really enjoyed this book. It was such a heart warming story about a boy who just wants to succeed at his favorite sport. This book teaches that you should never give up, and always keep practicing. Through hard work, good things can come.
The illustrations in this book were simple, but still did a good job at telling the story. ( )

I liked this book for many reasons. Gus begins to play basketball and really enjoys practicing and shooting around the ball but gets very nervous during the games. Gus' grandpa gives him some advice to help become less nervous during the game. Grandpa tells Gus to try to block out all the noise and sideline distractions because that is what he does when it is too noisy for him to hear himself think. Using the advice from Grandpa, Gus is able to make the game-winning shot. I liked the warm relationship Gus and Grandpa share with each other, the reader can definitely see how much they love each other through Grandpa's loving support for his grandson and his interests. I really enjoyed the watercolor illustrations throughout the book. I thought they really conveyed the text, especially during the basketball game, the reader can see all the chaos that is happening. This book is great for young readers transitioning to longer chapter books. Overall this book gives children lesson on persistence, achievement and family relationships.

Gus and Grandpa at Basketball is a chapter book tells about a story about a boy named Gus, who loves basketball. This chapter book is divided into four chapters, which include Basketball Practice, The First Game, More Practice and The Last Game. This is an actual inspiring story that tells Gus was lose in his first game, but he didn’t gave up. With the help of practice and his grandpa, finally he won the last game. Besides, the pictures in this book are water-colored, which are made story become more vivid. ( )

Age: Intermediate

Genre: This book was a realistic fiction book as everything within it is entirely possible. This book was about a boy playing basketball and when his grandpa eventually came to one of his games. This story is entire possible and is thus a realistic fiction book.

Characters: Grandpa is a flat character because we do not know much about him other than that he has a hard time hearing. He is also static as he does not change at all over the course of this book.

Media: colored pencil, some pastels.

Use: Have students write a book about how they at times can feel nervous as well.

With her usual adeptness, Mills follows Gus through another modern childhood rite of passage... this time, team sports. Gus loves basketball practice, but actual games are a different story — everyone seems to be shouting incomprehensible instructions at him, especially Gus's well-meaning but hard-pushing father.... Leave it to Grandpa to show Gus a way to tune out the noise and focus on the game. ... Catherine Stock's expressive illustrations accentuate Gus's initial panic on the basketball court, his dejection when he's benched, and his joy when, thanks to Grandpa's help, he makes a basket to win the game.

Gr 1-3 -- In the latest addition to the series, Grandpa helps his grandson overcome an emotional obstacle that many children will relate to--performance anxiety. Gus excels during basketball practice, but he is unable to perform during games. ... Stock's illustrations, which stand alone on certain pages and are integrated with the text on others, have a vintage quality to them; their watercolor and pencil strokes yield earthy browns and soft blues. ... Filled with fast-paced action and a bit of humor, the story is also rich with lessons in persistence, achievement, and family relationships, and is well suited for reading aloud as well as for beginning readers.
