Through interesting and vibrant illustrations and poems that are both informational and touching, the story of Lady Liberty begins to unfold. The design of the gift, it's infamous welcome, its journey and impact on new arrivals to America are portrayed in double page spreads in this picture book. This book goes over all of the important information that has to do with Lady Liberty, and everything she stands for. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. At first, I thought it was going to be a boring informational story about Lady Liberty and how she came to America, but it was so much more than that. The author, Doreen Rappaport, designed the story so that it was different people taking on the role as the narrator. One page would be written in the point of view of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the artist who designed Lady Liberty, and the next would be the point of view of someone else who was involved in the making and foreseeing of lady liberty. It also showed the point of view of immigrants coming to America and what it was like seeing her for the first time,"My grandfather left his home in Latvia more than a hundred years ago. He came to America to build a better life. He was on a ship packed with people from many different countries, speaking languages he did not understand. He slept in steerage with others who had no money, longing for fresh air. Then, early one morning shouts of “The Lady! The Lady” awakened him. He raced up to the deck. The ship was pulling into New York and there was Lady Liberty greeting them all…" The big idea of this book was to educate people on all the hard work and dedication it took from people all over the world to create Lady Liberty and make her a symbol of the United States. This book is extremely inspiring and I would definitely recommend it for educational and leisurely purposes. From the man who conceived of the statue, Edourd Laboulaye, to the sculptor and many other people who had a hand in bringing this symbol of friendship to America from France, this book tells a detailed story of how the Statue of Liberty came to be. The book is well researched with many interesting facts most likely unknown to its readers. The artwork is stunning, especially the large foldout illustration of the completed statue. Summary & Review: This biography on the Statue of Liberty is told by the perspective of those who created Lady Liberty. Poetry and elements of symbolism are integrated into this historical biography which takes place in New York. Colorful pictures help to keep children engaged and the material is understandable to young readers. This book is an interesting biography about Lady Liberty and the various people it took to create her and their own image or thoughts on her. Many different people, many who were immigrants played a part in the creation of Lady Liberty. My favorite part was the author's story of how her grandfather remembered Lady Liberty coming ashore in NYC. For example, she described how people were clapping, hugging, and crying as they saw the ship bring her in. It was a very powerful moment in time that was very accurately depicted by the author and illustrator. The illustrations were very life like and unbelievably none of them were photographs. I think this book is a great read to learn a little or a lot more about Lady Liberty and her many fans. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
