The French Portrait of a People, by Sanche de Gramont (read 18 Dec 2011) This is a 1969 book I hesitated to read since it is so old but I found it full of interesting insights into French history, government, and attitudes and even if it is not current it is a view of fascinating discussions of the way things were in France both in the past and at the time the book was written. The author, while educated at Yale and since 1977 an American citizen--under the name he assumed: Ted Morgan--seems very knowledgeable about all things French, even though he often seems pretty cynical about some French behavior.and practices. I suppose a more loyal son of France would say nicer things about some French traits than does the author, but at least one does not have the idea that the author is less than frank about the France of history and the France of the 1960s.
