Movies in the Mind is a decent how-to-write book, concentrating mostly on short stories although the techniques are applicable to many other formats. The author is passionate about emotion, so many of the writing exercises deal with creating three-dimensional characters that we feel something about. Like many writing books, the author does pay a little too much attention to her own stories -- one of those takes up about two dozen pages in the middle of the book, so we can get an idea of how she created the story, but oddly the story itself ends the chapter. The preface hints at a "series of books" by this author, but sadly, those were never published.
