Colin Shindler's remarkable history begins in 1948, as waves of immigrants arrived in Israel from war-torn Europe to establish new cities, new institutions, and a new culture founded on the Hebrew language. Optimistic beginnings were soon replaced with the sobering reality of wars with Arab neighbours, internal ideological differences, and ongoing confrontation with the Palestinians. Poorly organized and dry, dry, dry. It's a shame, because with better writing this could have been a great shorter alternative to Sachar's [b:A History of Israel: From the Rise of Zionism to Our Time|102195|A History of Israel From the Rise of Zionism to Our Time (Second Edition, Revised and Updated)|Howard M. Sachar|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1320516160s/102195.jpg|98535]. (I'm not saying that Sachar is a bad book, just that it's three times the length of this one.) ( )
