In this book, New Testament scholar Joel Green discusses the nature of humanity in light of current research in neuroscience. He argues for the monistic view that a person cannot exist apart from a physical body. His arguments are based more on science than biblical exegesis, and when he does finally engage the biblical material, he offers strained interpretations in order to make the Bible fit his understanding of current scientific findings. And he ignores much biblical evidence that would challenge his view. Although his conclusions are not convincing, he writes with clarity and verve as always, and his offering of a minority viewpoint is worth the reading. ( )
