I loved the way that the protagonist, on holiday and at a loose end, picks up a book of Tolstoy short stories and finds himself profoundly disturbed. And the way the author points out the significance of the character in bed next to his wife traitorously fantasizing about the banal teenager he's courting. The book was well-written and engaging, but I haven't yet finished it because when I got to the actual adultery... personally, I find that adultery is intrinsically boring. This is a book about a marriage and its failure. I found it to be a little too matter-of-fact in places; not telling enough of the story of the emotions. It's also a bit of a mixed genre . . . a bit of crime thrown in to a story which is primarily about relationships from the perspective of a middle aged man. I guess if it's a story by a man, writing about the experience of a man, you can't expect too much focus on emotions, can you? aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Every August, barrister John Strickland leaves London for the annual holiday at his wife Clare`s family home in Norfolk. This year, on a lazy summer`s afternoon Strickland, reads something that changes his life for good. All that Strickland has accepted as the way things are, for good or bad, is turned on its head. In a few short months he turns from middle-class lawyer into socialist MP, from loving husband to adulterer and more. Until one of his more cruel mid-life fantasies is brought to life - and John Strickland finds that despite everything he is and always will be a married man.
