Anabel Lee and her father have made a middle-of-the-night move from their former home to a remote hilltop house in Missouri. Anabel is glad that she was able to finish high school before the move, but has resigned herself to the fact that her father's bootlegging business has made them nomads and left her with a life of loneliness. So when a young boy named Jack Jones comes to the door, hungry and looking for work, Anabel eagerly invites him in. And Anabel's father quickly recruits him for his operation. Meanwhile, Jack's older sister is looking for her runaway brother and begs law officer Corbin Appleby to find him. Corbin does so easily, but he also stumbles across the rumrunners -- and Anabel, who attracts him immediately. What's an honest lawman to do?… (plus d'informations)

I didn't finish reading this one. I did get almost half way thru, kind of hard to believe that no one knew what she was up too- the smell? the drop offs? seemed a bit far fectched for Miss Garlock. ( )

Another very good book by Garlock about a simpler time with a little mystery and a little romance. I will continue with this series. ( )

Whiskey restrictions led to hiding and boldness in men wanting to secure financial futures for their families. Anabell was lonely; yet well protected by her father and two hired hands. Tess was on the other side of the woods and though lonely for female company she lived with her mean brothers. The story expanded with love and friendships and death of Anabell's father, plus death of the meanest oldest brother on Tess's side. ( )
