Benché scritto da un autore di fantascienza e uscito per Fanucci – ma in una collana ‘mista’ come ‘Estremi’ – questo discreto tomo di oltre cinquecento pagine ha assai poco di fantascientifico. Al limite, si tratta di fantasociologia, o di sociologia romanzata e basta: l’attenzione è difatti centrata sulle nefaste influenze che possono avere sulla mente umana la società dello spettacolo in generale e la televisione in particolare. Costruito attorno a un’interessante unità di tempo e di luogo, il romanzo racconta l’assalto di un gruppo di ecoterroristi a una scalcinata stazione televisiva di Los Angeles (da cui il brutto titolo italiano rispetto all’originale ‘Pictures at 11’) e la trattativa per la loro resa, con relativa liberazione degli ostaggi, che si snoda lungo otto infiniti giorni. I quali quattro ostaggi sono accuratamente descritti (il vecchio lupo, il piacente giornalista, la bambolona finta tonta, il reduce dell’Agenzia) come pure sono evidenziate le varie psicologie dei terroristi, queste ultime attraverso l’occhio della telecamera in una delle parti più riuscite del libro: ovviamente, visto anche il tipo di storia, la sfaccettatura psicologica è un po’ lasciata da parte, ma l’ambientazione in un mondo che – almeno dal di fuori – è bidimensionale rende funzionale l’interazione tra le varie maschere. Il contatto con il mondo esterno avviene solo attraverso il vivavoce del telefono, usato dalla CIA per un’opera di manipolazione della realtà che l’autore di diverte a disegnare all’insegna del cinismo esasperato, colpendo così un altro dei bersagli designati. Del resto, i dialoghi sono il vero motore della storia e, con la loro brillante costruzione, regalano a queste pagine il ritmo svelto e appassionante che ha la meglio nettamente sulle difficoltà implicite nella situazione di partenza.
