In ogni tempo e in ogni luogo si sono avute rivalità fra clan, tribù e popoli, e per quanto riguarda l'antico Israele sarebbe del tutto vano cercare di stabilire, con l'ausilio dei tradizionali documenti a nostra disposizione, se l'inimicizia che gli manifestavano i popoli vicini rivestisse fin dai tempi biblici un carattere speciale, se vi rientrasse una particolare virulenza.
