In a deserted artist's studio in the heart of Rome, detectives stumble upon a scene of shocking brutality: two bodies, freshly killed. Looming over them is a painting that bears all the hallmarks of a Caravaggio: a brilliantly colored canvas depicting a violent tableau of beauty and depravity. This grisly discovery sends Detective Nic Costa on a desperate chase through the streets of his city--a chase that will have devastating consequences.--From publisher description.… (plus d'informations)

When two people are found murdered in a quiet studio in Rome, the police are mesmerized by a painting hanging above the bodies, one that is unmistakably an unknown Carravagio. But the studio holds more mysteries than these, as investigation reveals the corpses of numerous women, and the clues point toward one of the richest and most unreachable men in Rome. Nic Costa and his colleagues are determined to bring the criminal to book, but soon the case turns far more dangerous, and personal, than any of them could have imagined….This is the sixth Nic Costa novel, and like its predecessors it is complex, difficult to read at times (because of grisly scenes) and full of well-realized characters. Rome itself, its history and especially its art, figures more strongly in this entry than in some of the other books in the series, which makes the reader want to travel there to see the places for oneself - and, hopefully, not to get murdered! Recommended. ( )

The Garden of Evil is the 6th of 9 in David Hewson's Nic Costa series about a police inspector in Rome. It is long, just under 600 pages, perhaps too long by at least 150 pages, and there are sections which bordered unfortunately on Keystone Cop funny, but substitute sisters for cops. Also the dialogue gets a little schmaltzy bot only occasionally does it ring false. I had read only the most current book in the series and when I read a synopsis of TGOE mentioning its ties to Caravaggio and his works I became interested; I also knew I would get another enjoyable tour of Rome, and would learn more about Nic's family and friends - all pluses. This begins with the abrupt end of Nic and Emily's marriage, and only a day or so later he meets Sr. Agata for the first time, a character who also appears prominently in book 9. I will give this series a rest for a few months but will read more, probably not the whole thing. I enjoyed putting my Kindle down often to find a referenced location on Google maps or to look up the real history of an historic figure in the plot. If you also enjoy those kind of "interruptions" this book will have appeal for you. Rated 3.5 stars. ( )

Imagine a crime in which you are personally involved, because your wife has been murdered. The perpetrator is a serial killer and you now have DNA evidence against him, and moreover you are pretty certain who he is. However, another investigator got there first - without the DNA evidence - and bungled the arrest. The killer is rich, well connected and uses the law to make sure that he cannot again be arrested unless a case that is believable is put before a magistrate and approved. He claims he is being harassed by the police and wants to stop it. He also seems to have the magistrates on his payroll.

All you have is the DNA and a strong hunch, and this guy is laughing in your face because he is untouchable. Question is - how do you nail the killer and still stay within the law? Leo Falcone, Nic's boss, decides that perhaps they can nudge the killer into a rash action which might give them their opportunity, but will it be enough?

This is the dilemma facing Nic Costa at the start of this novel, featuring the now familiar team of detectives and forensics in Rome. Like the previous novels in this series, this one features an established team: Falcone, Nic Costa, Peron, Teresa Lupo and Silvio Di Capua. But you don’t have to have read the earlier ones to enjoy this. ( )
