( ) Giles, Constance and Damaris Hopkins are all passengers aboard the crowded Mayflower, journeying to the New World to start a new life. Things get a little more cramped when their baby brother Oceanus is born during the passage. However, when they arrive, there are even worse challenges to face as the Pilgrims are subjected to hunger, cold, and sickness that put their small colony in great danger. With the help of the Native Americans though, they might just be able to survive their first year in this strange land--and have a November harvest to celebrate for generations! Summary: The book is about the journey that the Pilgrims from England went on, a long voyage that the Pilgrims were taking to the New World. The New World was America, the place where they sailed to on a ship called the Mayflower. The passengers on the Mayflower were the Hopkins family with a baby on that journey. They landed on Plymouth, for a year they went through some struggles why’ll they were there. This is the time that they made a celebration of Thanksgiving, the first Thanksgiving feast that the Colony had with the Native Indians there. The book goes on to talk about the hardships that they endured the in Plymouth in the winter, and when they began to plant crops with the help of the Native Indians from that area. The Pilgrim became good friends with the Native Indians, and had many Thanksgiving Celebrations. Personal Reflection: The book has great illustration of the situations that the Pilgrims had on their journey to the New World, and when they were in Plymouth with the Native Indians. This is the reason we celebrate Thanksgiving today. Classroom Extension: 1.The teacher can have the students make pictures of the celebration of Thanksgiving and have them make a Turkey drawing using their hand to make the picture of a Turkey. 2.The teacher can have them make Pilgrim hats, Feathers on a head band that the Native Indians used on their heads. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
