The Roman town at Wall, known to the Romans as Letocetum, lay on Watling Street, one of the main roads in Roman Britain. At first, the army established a succession of forts at the site. Later, a civilian settlement developed, as Wall became a key staging-post on Watling Street. Official travellers and postal couriers could change their horses and stay overnight in teh guest house at Wall and make use of the neighbouring baths, the remains of which are still visible today. There is also a small museum displaying a selection of the items found at the site, including jewellery, pottery and a range of tools, which shed light on the lives of Wall's former inhabitants. The guidebook is divided in two sections, the first giving a detailed tour of the site and the second looking at the history of Wall. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
