Mayday! Mayday! carries the reader through a Coast Guard rescue operation. When the "Mayday Mayday" call comes in, the crew springs into action. From piloting the helicopter to being the rescue swimmer, each member of the four person rescue team plays an important role in making sure each rescue mission is carried out safely. The book also includes a brief history of the United States Coast Guard. I thought this book was alright but was very brief. The rescue was not a specific rescue so there were no character names. I would use this story in a lesson talking about the role of the U.S. Coast Guard. ( )

This book uses poetry to allow kids to learn the adventure that Coast Guards participate in. It has rich vocabulary that my kindergartners are trying to learn. This book places the reader in the middle of a rescue that is currently taking place.
