( ) The Birthday Tree By Paul Fleischman A famer and his wife moved away from the sea because they had lost three sons to the waves of the sea. They went as far from the sea as they could. They made sure they could not hear the sea, see the sea, and even smell the sea. They decide to try again for a son, and received one. On the day of his birthday the famer planted an apple seed. The tree grew as did the boy did tall and strong. The boy was happy the tree stood tall and strong, and when the boy was sad the tree was weak and drooped. The boy left one day on his own. The tree had a bird that sat on the top of it when the boy was on lad and the sea. The tree one day started to lose his leaves and branches started to fall. So the famer and his wife gave up and though their son had dies at sea. So they packed up and headed to a town that no one knew them and the morning they were on their way the tree had leaves back on it and they had hope again.
