When this first edition was published in 1960, Ingmar Bergman had already been winning awards for his films mostly in Europe (e.g. at Cannes) for a few years, and rightfully so. He had an extraordinary string of films in the 1950’s (and of course beyond) which explored a wide range of topics, e.g. religion, life’s meaning, marriage, relationships, aging, and death, and did so in such a deeply personal and honest way. He did not shy away from showing the somber and dark aspects of life, but he was also lyrical and playful, particularly in his earlier films. This collection of screenplays includes Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), The Seventh Seal (1957), Wild Strawberries (1957), and The Magician (1958), as well as stills from the films and introductory material from Carl Anders Dymling, his producer, and Bergman himself. It’s quite simply a treasure to read, particularly those center two works, which are true masterpieces. ( )

My exposure to art films in Manila was a series of films in this book. I was so inspired I bought it to remember how these films affected me and change my view of cinema. ( )

The translators have not given the dialogue the care and polish that would (hopefully) be given to plays they were preparing for performance; still, Bergman’s considerable dramatic gifts and accomplishments can be detected even in the inelegant English. Taken simply and loosely as dramatic literature, as story outlines plus dialogue, these screenplays are surprisingly rich reading.

Just on the basis of the printed ‘page, Bergman is revealed to be a modern dramatist of considerable stature, a man whose sense of theatrical “effectiveness” is comparable with that of Tennessee Williams or Edward Albee. “Smiles of a Summer Night” is a beautiful film and the screenplay reads beautifully. The extraordinary film “The Seventh Seal” is somewhat diminished in the reading; the ideas are too transparent, while the visual imagery is only barely suggested. The screenplay for “The Magician” is perhaps even worse than the movie, which was humbug about humbug. “Wild Strawberries,” which is written with a great deal of descriptive detail in addition to the rather full narration, reads better than it played: without all the tricky effects and the sharp contrasts and the unconvincing look of the flashbacks, it seems a more serene contemplation of a man s life—not great, but fairly interesting.
