The Civil War in the south was never a good thing for almost everybody. This story represents the reversed fortunes of many southern families where virtually everything was lost. Even sometimes the faith that sustained many was lost when total deprivation happened. I appreciated the strength and courage of the main character but noted an absence of God throughout. ( )
