In today's political environment, who speaks for whom is not always clear. Over the past couple of decades, evangelical Christians have tended to be associated with the religious right and the most conservative positions of the Republican Party. Rebelling against this designation are those who prefer to be called Red Letter Christians, desiring to live out Jesus's words in the New Testament. Believing that Jesus is neither a Republican nor a Democrat, Red Letter Christians want to jumpstart a religious movement that will transcend partisan politics and concentrate on issues such as fighting poverty, caring for the environment, advancing peace, promoting strong families, and supporting a consistent ethic of life, all viewed as critical moral and biblical values. Into this arena of thought steps Tony Campolo, the powerful evangelist known for his passionate and prophetic sharing of the radical message of Jesus. In this book, Campolo examines many of the hot-button issues facing evangelicals from the perspective of Jesus's red-letter words in the Bible. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, Campolo will make you think, pray, and act.… (plus d'informations)

Very little of Campolo's conclusions in this book survives thoughtful analysis. He's all heart and overly simple in thought. I expected much more. ( )

Writing a review of a book like Red Letter Christians is difficult. The issues he brings up are difficult ones and he has a tendency to paint the issues with broad strokes. I do not always agree with him. Those who turn it exclusively as a political tome against the political right miss the point. Campolo's point is - are our political decisions matching what we see in the Bible - specifically the Gospels of the New Testament? The biggest thesis is that we must divorce our religious beliefs from our political affiliation; that neither Republicans or Democrats (although he is a Democrat and leans that way in the book) have a monopoly on faith.

He puts forth his view on a variety of topics, ranging from defense spending to gay marriage to abortion. And he does not put forth an argument that would be considered either far left or far right. In taking the approach he has, it ends up being a left of center approach. This book will challenge each side (perhaps conservatives more) in looking at their political stances from a larger window that party affiliation. A good book to read going into our election season. It reads like it was written by the Liberal incarnation of Pat Robertson. Starts by saying that God is neither a Republicans nor a Democrat...then proceeds to show how on every issue, he would be a Democrat. And on the handful of issues where Republicans are right, he denigrates their motives, and notes that they have too many other contradictory views to have their "correct" views be taken seriously. He claims Republicans are "hypocritical" for being pro-life, pro-capital punishment, anti-minimum wage, and anti-universal healthcare. Yet he lacks the integrity to acknowledge that Democrats must therefore ALSO be "hypocritical" for being pro-choice, anti-capital punishment, pro minimum wage, and pro-socialized medicine. Everything that George Bush does that he approves of is couched in the phrase, "to his credit..." The implication being, "Bush is generally evil...but TO HIS CREDIT..." What would be implied by a person who says, "Mahatma Gandhi, to his credit, was good on tax policy." What a hack piece. ( )

Given the general contemporary meanings and connotations ascribed to the word "Evangelical," a group of us who are speakers and authors and who share in evangelical theology got together and confessed that we have a hard time applying the label to ourselves anymore.
