In First Snow, a family of bunnies explores the nighttime landscape after the first snowfall of the year. Although the story itself is sparse, the prose is perfect for reading aloud, with alliteration creating a soothing sound for quieter scenes and action words making other parts of the book come alive. The large illustrations, rendered in pastels, are also excellent for story hour: although the animals seem flat compared to the beautiful landscapes in which they’re featured, the scenes are simple and clear enough for children in the very back of the room to enjoy. Illustrator Sebastien Braun adeptly creates a sense of stillness in his snow-covered vistas, and the text is arranged to allow the pictures to have maximum impact. Although this is book isn’t a necessary purchase, libraries with active story hour programs will benefit from adding this bunny tale to their collections. Ages 3-8. Ford, Bernette. First snow. (2005). New York: Scholastic. This picture book tells the story of Bunny and his brothers and sisters going out from their lair after the first snow of winter. They see animals and humans as they are playing in the snow under the moon. There isn’t really a story in this book. It simply shows the bunnies playing in a snow-filled meadow. The softly peaceful illustrations add significantly to the story. They are in muted colors to show the moonlit night, and they show snow flying in the air when a bunny is said to be tumbling. Small children will understand from this gentle story and beautiful pictures the special feeling the first snow brings. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
