Great documentation of vanishing civilizations ( ) This is a beautiful book with photographs from New Guinea (both PNG and the Indonesian province now called Papua). The photographer visited tribes in some 36 areas that were all little touched by modernity or progress. All pictures were taken in black and white in a style reminiscent of classical ethnographic photography. I visited Papua in 1990, experiencing myself situations which were almost like "first contacts". Taking these photographs must have required a lot of time and patience, as well as endless bush walks, bad meals, insects, and other hardship. Still, the dignity of these people as well as their diversity and art come out splendidly. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

New Guinea is home to more than a 1000 Stone Age tribes, each with its own language, customs and folklore which have changed little in 40,000 years. In eight trips over ten years, photographer Chris Rainier has travelled to the island to document the lives and rituals of the indigenous peoples. The result is this photographic record, showing the cultural distinctions of each tribe. Short essays accompany the photographs throughout, describing the adventures behind them. Traditions and celebrations captured include crocodile cults, ritualized costuming and tattooing, homosexual rites, sing-sing celebrations, spirit houses, rites of passage and shark calling.
