Today John Evelyn is known almost exclusively for his Diary, the remarkable record of his life at the centre of English social and political life in the seventeenth century; his other literary works have received scant attention. This handy volume includes several of the famous diarist’s works, including some early satirical screeds, such as his 1656 Character of England, his anti-pollution tract Fumifugium, and the first edition of his famous work on arboriculture: Sylva, (‘Or, a Discourse of Forest-Trees, and the Propagation of Timber in his Majesties Dominions’). The volume’s editor, Guy de la Bédoyère, provides an introduction and notes.
