I was inspired to pick up this Easy Rawlin’s mystery after watching Brown Girl Reading review it on her channel. “Devil in a Blue Dress”, set just after World War II, follows a black war veteran who gets embroiled in a steamy murder mystery. It’s a short read with a vivid place setting and a collection of shady characters. As a mystery, this one didn’t really grab me – Easy felt more like an observer than a participant and often encountered key pieces of information purely by accident. I felt like I want to see Easy in action as a private investigator more than I wanted all this exposition of how he got there. I’ll probably pick up the rest of the series, it’s great world to dip in and out of. ( )

I couldn’t put this down. It’s noir, hard-boiled detective African American lit and I’ve never read anything like it before. Amazing.

“I mean, there I was, a Negro in a rich white man’s office, talking to him like we were best friends – even closer. I could tell he did not have the fear or contempt that most white people showed when they dealt with me. It was a strange experience but I had seen it before.… It was the worst kind of racism. The fact that he didn’t even recognize our difference showed he didn’t care one damn about me. “ ( )

Definitely in the same vein as Chandler and Hammett, Mosley's Easy Rawlins is a man who finds life anything but easy.

For the first time in his life, he has something that's truly his (a house) of which he rightly proud. Unfortunately, he just lost his job and has a mortgage payment due, he doesn't have much choice in jobs, so, when one practically falls in his lap, he takes it on. In the process of searching for one Daphne Monet, Easy finds himself coming up such characters as Dewitt Albright, a man who makes the fat man in The Maltese Falcon look tame by comparison, a potential mayoral candidate with disgusting habits, Joppy, someone Easy had thought was a friend, Mouse, another long time friend, who doesn't have a conscience and is in fact a sociopath, a couple of cops who are more than happy to take their frustrations out on a black man, and a number of other people who really, really want what Ms. Monet has taken.

The story is interesting for a number of reasons, including the time period, 1948, the location, the neighborhood of Watts, the viewpoint of a man who at that point in time is at the bottom of the totem pole just for his skin color, the people he interacts with and the language. I would like to read more Mosley I think. ( )

I think this is a great addition to the hardboiled detective genre. Good action and characterization. Interesting having a black protagonist and his viewpoint in one of these novels.

Fun, kind of funny sometimes, thrilling. Everything you look for out of one of these books in this genre. Thrills, chills, betrayals and all that stuff. ( )

Been making my way through a lot of crime fiction lately and heard Mosley mentioned in passing in a review of No Sudden Move. The plot beats are the same as ever, but Mosley's prose and style elevate the amateur private eye tale. Can't wait to put the sequel on hold at the library.
