The book is a collection of haikus describing the delicious crops native to America. On the side of each page, Pat Mora talks about the origin of the food and includes familiar Spanish phrases. In the Dear Reader section she says, "We do know that all of these plants were grown and enjoyed by the peoples of the Americas long before Christopher Columbus or any other Europeans had ever tasted such foods. The world's variety is amazing - and delicious." I enjoyed reading this book and learning more about the crops native to our homeland. I would use this novel in a bilingual classroom to promote ELL and to educate the class about the true history of our country. ( )

Pat Mora describes the delicious foods native to the Americas. The Narrator travels around the Americas and explains each ingredient that became known and we now eat. This book can be used as a resource for children to learn about different food around the world and it is written in poem format. Also, the author wrote the crops in Spanish, which helps bilingual students and promotes English learning. I would use this book to teach about the Americas and the different types of crops grown. This book is comprised of different poems that depict the different food from the Americas. English and Spanish students could use this book because it is in each respective language; therefore, a good source for English Language Learners that are learning about food from different cultures. Teachers can create a lesson on diversity by having each student pick a culture and bring a food item from that culture. ( )

There are multiple poems and explanations and history about the different foods in Spanish that are from both the southern part of North America and South America. It teaches the reader to eat healthier its not as tasty as junk food. It helps the children learn about different crops and how healthy they are. It also shows different ways we can use fruit, vegetables, nuts etc. It Is a great book that helps bilingual students and encourages Spanish as a second language. ( )

This is a poetry book filled with information and poems about different foods that come from the Americas. I liked this book very much because it gave a little bit of the history of the fruits or food it had a poem over. It is a good way for children to learn about poems and about the origins of foods they may eat. ( )
