They Hanged My Saintly Billy is true crime as only a true literary master could write it, with exquisitely rendered portrais of Palmer's era and milieu, told from the shifting perspectives of all who came into contact with the notorious doctor. Just as his renowned I, Claudius opened a window onto a case of history once thought to be closed, Graves's account of Palmer's life recasts the surgeon as a victim of yellow journalism and overzealous judges. But ultimately it's left up to the reader to decide whether or not Palmer's mother is in the right, or merely duped along with the rest of Palmer's supporters, when she laments- "Yes, they hanged my saintly Billy! He was a bit of a scamp right enough, but a good son to me; the best of the brood . . . and no murderer." Seven Stories' Robert Graves Project spans 14 titles, and includes fiction and nonfiction, adult, young adult and children's books, in a striking new uniform design, with new introductions and afterwords. They Hanged My Saintly Billy joins our recent re-publication of The Reader Over Your Shoulder, Ann at Highwood Hall, The Golden Fleece, and Homer's Daughter. Among the works still to come are Count Belisarius, Hebrew Myths, and Lawrence and the Arabs. The online partner for the Robert Graves Project is RosettaBooks… (plus d'informations)

"They Hanged my Saintly Billy" is a fictional retelling of the murder trial of Dr. William Palmer, in 19th century England. I admire Robert Graves' wonderfully detailed retellings of historical figures such as in: King Jesus, I Claudius, etc. This one was no less detailed, but bogged down a little at the end in the snippets of the trial. The story is told through depositions of the various witnesses, and people involved with William Palmer, but I assume that Graves used the testimony from the trial to recreate their depositions to show how the trial was a miscarriage of justice. As a novel, it isn't as rollicking as the Claudius novels, nor as satisfying, but still intriguing as the protagonist is definitely a rogue whether or not he was a murderer. ( )

From the cover of another edition: A Novel Filled with Sex, Drink, Dope, Incest, Suicides, Murders, Legal Proceedings and a Good Public Hanging.
Pretty well describes it.
British William Palmer was publically hanged in 1856 for the murder of his friend, John Parsons Cook. Palmer proclaimed his innocence, and his trial was a seething spectacle of everything that could go wrong with the justice system doing so. Robert Graves sides with the "Innocent" party; the Judge in the case pushed for "Guilty" all the way. Which was true?
