Si l'on retrouve dans ce septième volume de la série Frère Cadfael en Sherlock Holmes médiéval, et son pittoresque monastère de Shrewsbury, l'auteur délaisse cette fois le contexte politique de l'Angleterre du 12ème siècle pour se concentrer sur une affaire de mœurs. L'enquête est aussi plus simple et sans grande surprise, l'histoire doublement romantique et se termine comme à l'accoutumée très moralement. Pas le meilleur cru, mais malgré tout un agréable moment de lecture. ( )
