I originally picked this up to find out what the "New Avengers" were all about before I read the Fear Itself: New Avengers comics. Unfortunately there have been at least 2 "New Avengers" series'. This one is from 2006 and the one connected to Fear Itself is from 2011 and part of the Heroic Age thing.

Anyway, not bad at all, kind of strange that it starts off with a "breakout" on the Raft, which is the same thing that happens in Fear Itself AND that Luke Cage just happens to be there both times. S.H.I.E.L.D is seeming especially shady in this one and I wouldn't be surprised to see some helicarriers blowing up in the next graphic novel. Also very curious if the Sentry will be making a reappearance. ( )

Et nyt hold, nye kræfter eller bare en ny nummerering skal redde gamle klenodier fra faldende salgstal og truslen om lukning. Den proces har Avengers – eller Alliancen som de hed i min barndom – også været igennem, og i dette album med hæfter fra 1995 følger vi dannelsen af den nye gruppe.

Det hele starter med et udbrudsforsøg fra Ryker Islands supersikrede fængsel for superskurke. Tilfældigvis er Dæmonen (Matt Murdoch), Luke Cage og Spiderwoman (Jessica Drew) til stede, og inden længe dukker Captain America, Spiderman og Iron Man også op. I første omgang drejer det sig om at få styr på situationen, og derefter starter jagten på bagmændene. Hvem var målet for aktionen, og hvem benyttede sig bare af muligheden?

Det er især kaptajnen, der er ivrig efter at samle en ny gruppe, og det lykkes ham at overtale de andre (i hvert fald de fleste af dem) til at være med, og voilá: De nye Avengers er født!

Af Marvels supergrupper har jeg altid været mindst begejstret for Avengers. Fantastic Four er en familie, og X-Men bindes sammen af deres status som udstødte. Avengers minder om et Greatest Hits album, der mere er styret af profitmaksimering end indre logik. Det er også tilfældet med den nye gruppe, som næsten udelukkende består af Marvels bedst sælgende solohelte. (Captain America påstår selvfølgelig at det er ”skæbnen”, der har bragt dem sammen…)

Superheltehistorier er som science fiction: De gode historier er ikke mere realistiske end de dårlige, men den verden de tænker frem er mere fantasifuld og hænger bedre sammen. Desværre hører De nye Avengers til i den middelmådige ende af spektret med ret traditionelle konspirationsteorier og banal personkarakteristik. ( )

I'll admit, while I love comic books, I haven't read a huge amount of these collected anthologies. With that being said, this has probably been my favorite one to date! Taking place after the end of the Avengers and before the events chronicled in House of M, a dire situation at Ryker's Island has brought together an unlikely group of heroes to continue on as the New Avengers. Breakout stars Iron Man, Captain America, Spider-Woman, Spider-Man and Luke Cage as the New Avengers and the fight takes them from Ryker's Island to Savage Land in search of who or what is behind a mysterious jailbreak of many dangerous super-villains!

This is a very short read due to its fast pace. Expect to finish this one in an hour or two. There are also many thrills and mysteries to be had! Who has their hand in a shady offshoot of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Just exactly what side is Spider-Woman on and who is her mysterious second source of information? Why are there super-villains still alive whose files indicate that they are most certainly dead? What is the real meaning behind the release of Sauron? And will Matt Murdoch ever come around and agree to be part of the new Avengers team? So many of these questions are posed in this anthology and I can't wait to pick up the next volume to find out what happens next!

Well-written and beautifully, though rather darkly, illustrated, I found this to be a superb anthology with the beginnings of a great story arc. Plus, looks like the writers decided to make a team full of jokesters galore with the sheer amount of comic quips to be found within. It definitely makes for a fast, funny and interesting read! I'd absolutely recommend New Avengers: Breakout to seasoned comic fans and those new to the universe alike! ( )

Formed while containing a breakout of supervillians from Ryker's Island peniteniary, the New Avengers travel to the Savage Land in Antarctica to fight Sauron and discover a covert operation. ( )
