El final de la II Guerra Mundial parecía suponer por fin el retorno a la felicidad de los Aldridge. Sin embargo, la paz de esta familia se ve truncada con la trágica muerte de la madre en un absurdo accidente del que es testigo su hijo, Lewis, un niño tranquilo y sensible de diez años. Padre e hijo afrontan la pérdida de una manera muy distinta: mientras el padre contrae matrimonio rápidamente, el traumatizado pequeño empieza a comportarse de una manera poco convencional para las rígidas normas de la época. Será el comienzo de una cadena de desgracias.
This was such a good book in many ways - great plot, interesting setting, good writing - that I really wanted to love it. However, I became so despondent at so many awful characters that I just wanted it to be over. Apart from Kit, everyone around Lewis was horrific or weak or nasty or all of these. The doctor was kind near the end but why not sooner? The darkness and sadness were just too much. Another smaller point was the awkward way conversations were presented. It was often difficult to figure out who was saying what.
Actually a 2.5-I rounded up simply because I did like the ending. A beacon of hope in a tale of gloom. Another star for the writing style which was simple and direct, an excellent device for portraying complex, powerful emotions. This is generally not a happy tale, awful events piled one on top of the other in an almost unremitting stream. I can cope with that , but I found it very difficult to care about any of the characters, even the main ones. Now need to seek out something cheerful to read next. ( )
