Two stage review:[return][return]About 6 "chapters" into the first omnibus. My 5yo is enjoying it, so points for that. [return][return]Quel surprise, my main complaint is about gender. The titular female protagonist -- Sardine -- is cool. But it's not exactly a feminist triumph. In the first five books, there is only one female character -- Sardine. The villains are male; her two named comrades are male (Louie & her Uncle Yellow); random characters encountered are also male (Lion & Daddy Lion; the Honkfish Emperor; Omar & Paul). Then in the sixth chapter ("Planet Discoball") there's finally another female character -- a villainous mom & her son. The mom tortures people by making the male characters dance with her. [return][return]So, we'll keep reading; I'll keep re-gendering on the fly and/or discussing gender; and I'll hope that the author of The Rabbi's Cat does a little better as time goes on.[return][return]Update at end: Yes, in one of the last chapters, there are several other female characters! Uncle Yellow's mom who wants her son to get married, so she has brought along a girl and her parents as marriage candidates. Groan. [return][return]My 5.5yo thought it was very goofy & silly & loved things like Supermuscleman's pants getting cut off so his butt hung out naked. We'll keep reading it, I guess, and I'll keep pointing out that -- notwithstanding the female protagonist -- girls are getting short shrift in this series. ( )

This book looks very entertaining. I could see how it could easily be incorporated into a middle grade class. It is very colorful and the pictures are very funny and keep the reader engaged. I would recommend this book to anyone who has younger kids whether they struggle with reading or not. ( )

Cute and fun, in a ridiculous way. This graphic novel feels like it's written BY kids for kids. Which is to say, kids would probably love it, and I thought it was all right. I feel like SpongeBob SquarePants is better written (but has the same kind of feel).
