Eventually this book really picked up and was thoroughly enjoyable. ( ) Another great book in this series, actually the first one though I've been reading them out of order. Nicholas is half-gypsy, but the grandson and heir of an Earl. Clare Morgan is a schoolteacher in the small Welsh village nearby. Concerned about conditions at the coal mine, she makes a bargain with Nicholas that leads to a lot of drama and romance. It's a well-told story involving details about Methodism, coal mining, Romany, and other historical facts, as well as the chemistry between the H/h. Nicholas has issues due to his upbringing and race while Clare is the daughter of a Methodist minister with a hidden fire under her prim exterior. It's a great start to the series. A first-class romance, a page-turner. Two great characters Nicholas Davies, the Earl of Aberdare, is half-Gypsy and has avoided his ancestral home in Wales for four years. Clare Morgan is determined to see him improve life for the villagers in Penreth. Nicholas makes a bargain with her, he will help the village if she lives with him for three months. She accepts. Their lives are changed forever. The secrets all come out at the end and I never saw them coming. Wonderful suspense, stunning romance. I think this book is secretly a TARDIS, but, rather than being bigger on the inside, it's longer. There's perhaps too much time spent on "what a good Methodist should do." I understand that, as a reverend's daughter, Clare needs to come to terms with some things, but I just found myself tiring of it. And then, when she decides to become Nick's lover, it's like it's no longer a serious issue, which is just unreasonable with her character. Also, along those line, Nick is supposed to be this big bad rake, but he really doesn't come off that way to me. All of his rakish tendencies are shown as past matters, and I would have liked that aspect to be a little darker and more present—not that his history isn't dark in itself, though. I do wish the mine plot line weren't so predictable. And I could have done without all the drama with Michael, but I understand that it serves to set up his book. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
