Scientific American continues to be the best of the available science magazines readable by non-specialists. However, the quality of articles in Scientific American has slid since the editorship of Gerald Piel who left in 1986. Articles are now aiming at giving an impressionistic rather than precise account of advanced topics. Scientific American has takenn on a commendable mission to debunk pseudo-science. Unfortunately, Scientific American seems to share the typical scientists' discomfort with extrapolation. If a research program strains their imagination, they are inclined to irrationally attack it. In recent years Scientific American has published diatribes against respectable research programs in molecular nanotechnology and anti-aging. The editors do not appear to have a grasp of exponentially increasing change.
As a lifelong images, I don’t always “just look at the pictures!” The articles, will keep me renewing! He makes me laugh out loud!
