"It's 1989 and Rae Earl is a fat, boy-mad seventeen-year-old girl, living in Stamford, Lincolnshire, with her mum and their deaf white cat in a council house with a mint-green bathroom and a refrigerator Rae can't keep away from. She's also just been released from a psychiatric ward. My Mad Fat Diary is the hilarious, harrowing, and touching real-life diary Rae kept during that fateful year and the basis of the hit British television series of the same name now coming to Hulu. Surrounded by people like her constantly dieting mum, her beautiful frenemy Bethany, her mates from the private school up the road (called "Haddock," "Battered Sausage," and "Fig") and the handsome, unattainable boys Rae pines after (who sometimes end up with Bethany . . .), My Mad Fat Diary is the story of an overweight young woman just hoping to be loved at a time when slim pop singers ruled the charts. Rae's chronicle of her world will strike a chord with anyone who's ever been a confused, lonely teenager clashing with her parents, sometimes overeating, hating her body, always taking herself VERY seriously, never knowing how positively brilliant she is, and keeping a diary to record it all. My Mad Fat Diary--365 days with one of the wisest and funniest girls in England"--… (plus d'informations)

Considering how obsessed I was (and still am) with Louise Rennison’s Confessions of Georgia Nicholson series I can’t quite believe that the real-life diaries of Rae Earl never crossed my path. Fictional teenagers are fab, but reading Rae’s diaries is even more poignant because the stories are true to her life experiences (or at least only minorly altered for the sake of anonymity and the logical progression of the story). I watched the tv show that came from these books last year, and even though the show has a very distinct style that relies on the medium of film, the book series was clearly a huge influence since Rae’s voice comes through regardless of the medium. Her weird mind (and I do not mean weird in a bad sense) is definitely unique, especially from many of the other teenage diarists that I’ve read, so I was happy to see so much cross-pollination and Rae’s true self shining through! Can’t wait to read the second book and see how Rae deals with all of the drama of growing up - boys, bitchy friends, her silly mother, A-levels, and of course her complex relationship with food and herself. Painfully relateable content. It took me back. ( )

I was left sobbing in the last episode of the tv series "My Mad Fat Diary" and I just knew I needed to read the memoir that inspired such great story. Surprisingly, a friend of mine gifted it to me as soon as she found out I was obsessed with Rae Earl and her world. And although I still haven't finished reading the whole book (Just Yet), I'm deffinitely having such a good laugh with it. It's also really different from what I'm used to read but it was, for sure, a first good experience. I also feel compelled to purchase the second one already! ( )

My Fat, Mad Teenage Diary (renamed after the TV show to My Mad Fat Diary) is a collection of diary entries Rae Earl wrote as a teenager.

Plot:
It's the 80s. Rae is 17, mad about boys and music and lives with her mother in a council house. She's also struggling. The relationship with her mother is strained, but that's the least of her problems. Rae is fat which makes her incredibly insecure and she also has mental health issues that make her life even more difficult. But she's also funny, smart and there are the boys in her neighborhood to obsess about.

I watched the TV show based on this book (and its sequel) and fell in love with it pretty immediately. And now that I finally picked up the book, I loved it, too.

A special thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Delightful, humorous, honest, and sometimes heartbreaking. I really enjoyed this book and have heard it is a TV show as well that I would love to check out since I absolutely adore British telly. My only complaint is that it was a bit long, I felt some of the entries could've been omitted. All-in-all, a super fun read, and I can't wait for the next one. ( )

For
My husband – for not letting me burn these diaries when I wanted to . . .
Kevin Earl – for three decades of comedy genius but especially for the card game ‘Wolf’
But most of all
For my mum – for not letting me watch Threads and for saying the immortal words ‘You can print what you like if I can have a new cooker’
