Magic Real Magic Ever wanted to learn? We require someone with intelligence and a disciplined mind. Those well versed in fantasy novels and role-playing games a plus. May need to travel. Only those of good character need apply. No appointment necessary. When he answers an intriguing advertisement in the newspaper, James couldn't possibly have known that it would thrust him into the middle of a quest that will test the limits of his intelligence and courage. James, a high school senior, is not given any sort of explanation why or how he's been brought to this strange, mystical world. He quickly realizes that he's able to use the knowledge he's gained through reading hundreds of books as well as the time spent in role-playing games to help him cope. The world he's entered is one on the edge of war, and only by learning to control the magic within himself will he be able to survive the trials ahead. With the help of a boy named Miko, James sets out on an adventure across this strange world to discover why he's there-and what he must do. I couldn't even force myself to finish this. This book is boring and poorly written. ( )

Great story couldn't put it down till I finished it. Will be getting the next in the series today! Anyone who likes Fantasy books will like this series. Although I have read stories with a similar beginning this series stands apart.

This was a really good beginning to the Morcyth Saga. James is a normal 19-year-old kid who lives with his grandparents because his parents are dead. He's finished with school, so his grandparents are encouraging him to find a job.

James finally finds a job ad for a magician's assistant that sounds interesting, so he heads off with a friend for an interview. Once he steps through the door, there's no turning back. He appears to have traveled to a new world where magic is possible.

James is initially worried about what his friend would think & how worried his grandparents might become; however he is so intrigued that he sets off through a forest in search of the magician. All he has to guide him is a small book and the instructions from a little creature telling him to head for a specific town where he would learn more.

The adventures from this point on are quite amazing as James learns that he can actually work magic. He also knows that whatever happens he will always try to help others. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the saga.

My only complaint is that the author, Brian S. Pratt, used present tense for all of the narrative instead of using past tense as most other authors do. It made for some awkward sentence construction. I hope the rest of the saga adjusts the narrative, but I certainly plan on reading all of the books anyway. I would just enjoy them more and be more inclined to give them 5 stars. ( )

I wanted to really like this book - it had all of the elements I love, including a tie-in from our world to theirs, the standard fantasy complement, and a strong element of adventure. Even with these elements in place, it really fell flat for me. The situations seemed a little contrived, the main character was completely unrealistic in his altruistic nature (WAY too 'goody goody'), and it ended in the worst possible way. I mean, I understand that there are more books in the series, but it felt like this book almost ended mid-sentence.
On the topic of sentences, the editor was asleep when this was put before them methinks - there are grammar and spelling mistakes aplenty, detracting from the overall story and pulling you out of the flow of the book. It could have been a lot better if these were corrected and not so prevalent.
I gave this book two stars because I feel like it has some redeeming value and perhaps in subsequent books the problems are corrected - unfortunately, for me the damage was done with this one and I had no interest in pursuing the others. ( )

I thought the book reached out to it's target audience well. It had an interesting story, ended at a logical place yet leaves you wishing to know what happened to some characters. It is a bit like reading a role playing game but then again isn't that the premise? I am not going to knock the author for accomplishing what seems to be intended. I enjoyed it for what it was, entertainment. If your looking for a deep philosophical read this isn't it. The story is engaging and the characters are endearing. It paints a story of friendship and self worth that gives a positive picture of what young people can accomplish. I found it more engaging than some of the teen self doubt stories. I was entertained even though I am far from the target audience and know nothing about role playing games. It's an enjoying the light read. ( )
