Eerst even een bekentenis: ik las nog geen enkel boek van Smith. Ik weet dus niet of Meisje ontmoet jongen (gebaseerd op De mythe van Iphis) representabel is voor haar andere werk.
Maar dit boek, boekje: wow. 160 pagina’s maar wat voor een pagina’s! Kocht je ooit Dr. Martens schoenen? Dan weet je wat ik bedoel. Je koopt ze, bent er heel blij mee maar na de eerste keer dragen denk je: why!? Je bijt dan toch maar door, want ja, best duur enzo. En plots heb je slofjes aan je voeten, loop je op wolkjes, wil je die schoenen nooit meer uitdoen en vraag je je af wat je vroeger deed, voor je die hemel op aarde aan je voeten had.
Wél, dat gevoel had ik bij dit boek. Ik dacht eerst even dat het mijn eerste en laatste Ali Smith zou worden, maar ik beet door en plots zat ik angstig traag te lezen omdat ik het aantal te lezen pagina’s zag minderen en ik echt niet wou dat het boek ooit uit was.
Ik vertel niets van de plot, lees het gewoon zelf. Wat ik wel wil zeggen is dat het een geweldige mengeling is van mythe, sprookje, spoken word, poëzie, voicebericht, activistisch pamflet, familiekroniek, maatschappelijke aanklacht en een liefdesverhaal en dat op amper 160 pagina’s! Boordevol meeslepende opsommingen, rake observaties, treffende karaktertekeningen en 4de wand doorbrekingen (wat heel flauw is als het slecht is gedaan maar je echt bij de lurven grijpt als het goed gebeurt en dat doet het hier).
Wat een pareltje, wat een genot, hoe groot het zwarte gat nu ik het uit heb. Maar: ik heb nog zo veel Ali Smith te ontdekken: hoera! ( )
I often loved the truly beautiful, poetic writing that conveyed the character development and the themes (family, love, rebellion, access to water, feminism, patriarchy, identity, etc). Many times, though, that flowing, almost abstract writing style turned into less focused, more stream-of-consciousness passages (page-long sentences, really?) that were incredibly annoying to get through. Overall though I enjoyed what the book had to say and how it said it. ( )
