With this fourth — and longest — part, we reach the mid-point of the series. We're in the years 1975-79, so Maarten Koning has now been at the Office for twenty years, and he's reached his fifties. The focus changes from the international scientific disputes which dominated Part Three, and we're now much more involved with Maarten's struggles to come to terms with his role as a manager and find ways to impose his authority on co-workers who have different ideas about how the job should be done — and indeed about what the job actually is, as there are still plenty of grey areas in the definition of ethnology as a subject.

The foreground is filled, as always, with the minute detail of coffee-breaks, filing-systems, staff-meetings and committees, but slightly offstage there's also the less distinct story of how Maarten's work is affecting his marriage. Maarten's mother-in-law is declining gradually into dementia, whilst Beerta is still mentally alert but has never quite recovered physically from the stroke he suffered at the end of Part Three, and is now living in a care-home. As the title has already given it away, it's no surprise to see this part ending with the Office being renamed in Beerta's honour. Other memorable set-pieces include a rather harrowing week of interviews of candidates for a vacant post, and a couple of departmental outings, on one of which Maarten has to be saved from sinking into a morass.

The scale and level of trivial detail of this novel is such that you sometimes get the depressing illusion that you're reading it in real time, and that Maarten will never catch up with you in age, but that's also its strength: it's easy to believe that no-one else has ever got close to the realism with which Voskuil captures the wave of despair that runs through you when you hear the words "I just have a small point concerning the minutes of the last meeting..." ( )

Het Bureau blijft zich uitbreiden, ongeschikte medewerkers blijven gehandhaafd en Maarten Koning probeert steeds weer kool en geit te sparen door zelf heel hard te werken. Ook komt hij in steeds meer commissies te zitten, ook al heeft hij het gevoel er helemaal geen verstand van te hebben.
Meneer Beerta blijft op de achtergrond aanwezig (Maarten probeert hem elke week een bezoek te brengen in het verpleeghuis) en om politieke redenen wordt het Bureau uiteindelijk het "A.P. Beerta-Instituut" genoemd.
Ik blijf me afvragen waarom ik het allemaal lees. Soms is het wel aardig, b.v. als Maarten over zijn vak schrijft of spreekt, maar dat hij het lastig vindt om met mensen om te gaan en leiding te geven, dat weten we zo langzamerhand wel.

The continuation of the Bureau series, in the same vain as the other three books. Some of the people Maarten works with really annoy me, or what annoys me more is actually how Maarten (doesn't) deal with it. I wouldn't know a solution either, but I do know that the mood in the office isn't what he wants, or what I would want. But later on in the book I get the feeling Maarten doesn't care anymore, so neither does the reader have to. The sections, each covering one year, seem to get longer, but I still enjoy reading it. Part 5 is next for me. ( )

Ik ben nog steeds stug aan het doorlezen in "Het Buraeu". De opmerkingen die ik al over de vorige delen heb gemaakt gelden ook voor dit deel. Ook deel 4 beschrijft in zeer precieze taal de gebeurtenissen op het Bureau zoals gezien door de hoofdpersoon, Maarten de Koning, nu in de jaren 1975-1979. Het is onvoorstelbaar dat deze roman zo lang blijft boeien. Ik denk dat de mensen die ook dit deel uit hebben gelezen ook de resterende 3 delen wel zullen lezen (het laaste deel nr 7 verschijnt deze maand). Ik vind "Het Bureau" een van de meest fascinerende romans ooit gelezen.

Een meesterwerk vind ik Het Bureau tot nog toe niet. Het is aardig, niet zonder verdienste, maar was het niet zo dik geweest, had niemand er om gekraaid, zo vermoed ik. En dat het zo dik is, tsja - ook dat is aardig en niet zonder verdienste, maar had dat echt gehoeven? Van karakterontwikkeling is amper sprake. Mensen/personages die je onderhand twintig jaar en langer 'kent', denken nog op net dezelfde wijze. Maarten Koning zegt graag dat hij zich interesseert voor de (functionele) verandering die tradities en cultuur ondergaan, maar de personages rond hem staan (en ze staan daar al lang) stokvast op hun plaats genageld. Zelf wordt hij wat rechtser, zegt hij zelf, maar ook dat zegt hij al twintig jaar ... Verder blijven het karikaturen, personages die links de buhne opstrompelen en er rechts weer afdonderen, waarna ze twee pagina's later - opnieuw links die buhne opkomen, en opnieuw rechts er weer af. Het kuiert ... en doet dat steeds willekeuriger.
