I don't know how I had never stumbled across this information before, but 'The Thrill Club' is one of only two main Fear Street novels with a known ghostwriter. Novelist Tom Perrotta ('The Leftovers', 'Election') admitted to the deed during an interview a few years back. I kind of figured this was the case as there is no way Stine put out as much as he did in the mid-90s without some help. I don't think any of Perrotta's latent talent comes through in this book, in fact this is the book that killed my reading for a good six weeks. I'm sure the continuing pandemic, holiday stress, and the greatest threat to our democracy had nothing to do with that. 'The Thrill Club' features the first black person I've ever seen in Shadyside: Shandel Carter. It also Talia is a little upset by all this, especially as its her boyfriend, Seth, who's been doing all the writing for her because...she's too busy for her hobby? It makes no sense, but neither does any direction that this story takes. The killer could be any member of their group, but who? And why blame Talia? Is she possessed by something?! I couldn't even. Fear Street in Publication Order Next #36: 'The Dead Lifeguard', Super Chiller #6 Previous #34: 'Double Date', Fear Street #23 Possible Spoiler Alert: So yeah, we knew it had to be Seth, because the main character is never guilty unless they are possessed by an evil spirit (or have split personalities, etc.) So the question is: how many people actually live to graduate from Shadyside? Also, the people seem to think that Seth just died at the end, but they really ought to be freaked out because he explained that he learned how to leave his body and enter other people's bodies, so that seems the obvious explanation for what he did at the end. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Talia is a member of the Thrill Club with five of her friends. In this club, she tells spooky stories to everyone. Lately, she's been slacking and one of the other members is writing her stories.... but something strange is also happening. These horror-filled stories of death and murder are now happening to the people she wrote them about. Talia also can't seem to remember parts of her day, and she doesn't even realize it... Something spooky is going down on Fear Street.
This book is short but fast paced. It's the fun kind of horror I like in an R.L. Stine book. There's twists and turns, there's descriptive or spooky horror and it's just lots fun. The action or deception never stops! There's also blood and gore, which is rare for a YA (but this was also written many years ago, so the status quo for gore has changed).
I'm also super glad that this book has held up. The only thing I can say is that I found a couple of the characters unbearable, but that's typically how it works with YA. There's always that bratty or snobby character that nobody likes. The deaths also don't affect the people in the story that much. The characters seem to be sad for a couple moments and get passed it. Again, this is YA and it doesn't have many extra pages for fluff like that, so it's just me being picky.
Overall, this book is predictable but loads of fun! I definitely want to pick up the remaining Fear Street books. That may take me a millennia, but I will get there eventually!
Four out of five stars. ( )
