The art is in black and white, of course, but the story is still fun. If you haven't seen the show or read earlier issues/volumes, there's a 'the story so far' page and a page introducing the six principal characters appearing in this issue. As I recall, 'inu' means 'dog'. According to my old KENKYUSHA's NEW JAPANESE-ENGLISH DICTIONARY, 'Yasha' means 'female demon' or 'she-devil'. Inu-Yasha is definitely male. So is Marvel Comics' superhero, Banshee, even though a banshee is a female spirit.
Inu-Yasha is the son of a dog demon and a human woman. He could pass for a normal human if not for his orange eyes with their slit pupils, fangs, and his dog-like ears. His fingernails are pretty sharp, too. In Japan, his silvery-white hair might not be normal, but in America he'd just be considered a platinum blond. ('Blonde' is the feminine noun form.)
Kagome is a modern Japanese schoolgirl who divides her time between Inu-Yasha's era, which is over 400 or 500 years ago, and the present. Kagome is the reincarnation of Inu-Yasha's beloved Kikyo. She's inherited Kikyo's powers without Kikyo's knowledge and skill in using them.
Girl and half-demon are seeking shards of the sacred Shikon Jewel. Even shards can confer great power, so demons are actively hunting them, too. Shippo is an orphaned kitsune (fox demon) who tags along. Shippo looks like a toddler except for his pointed ears, slit pupils, fangs, fox tail, and little fox feet.
Miroku the monk has great power even beyond the horrific curse inherited from his father and grandfather. Too bad he also inherited Grandpa's greatest character flaw. There are plenty of battles, both physical and verbal. It's a fun read. (
