I'd probably give the beginning a 4, the middle a 3 (for staling) and the end a 5. Overall, this is one of my favorite books mainly for the character, which remain great. However, the plot was a bit dragged out in this one. ( ) The series charts the rise of a relative nobody to captain of the Imperial Bodyguard, friend and ultimately betrayer of the Emperor. The author's own notes point out the falacy (as he sees it) of the older SF systems with galaxy spanning empires. The betrayal at the end of the series is thus essential so that the society can become a free democracy. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Quelling a civil war was nothing new for Sten. But as one thing after another went wrong, he began to suspect that he was up against more than a mere local disturbance. And that someone wanted nothing more than to see Sten dead . . .
