A forest full of wild animals. Disappearing huntsmen. A wild man guarding a golden spring. That is only part of the world the prince lives in. His father captured the wild man after many of his huntsmen were killed in the forest. The prince became fascinated with the wild man and the spell he is under. Drawn towards this strange man, the prince sets him free and leaves with the man to live in the forest. The wild man, Iron Hans, has the prince watch the golden spring to keep it from getting polluted. But the boy disobeys and his hair touches the water, turning to shining gold like the sun. Iron Hans sends the boy out into the world to learn how to be poor, but promises to help whenever the boy needs assistance. The story continues to follow the prince as he learns what it is to be poor, and also how to be brave, modest, and good. How does the story end? Read and find out!
“Iron Hans” is a retelling of the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale. The story is like a classic fairy tale, having a main character who must go through trials before getting home. But there are many roads the hero could travel and he must choose wisely. “Iron Hans” is really an interesting read because it is not one of the well know fairy tales. In “Iron Hans”, the hero cannot find a true home until he learns the lessons Iron Hans believes he must learn. This book is a great read for children who love fairy tales. ( )

I really enjoyed reading two very different but equally engaging versions of this folk tale as I had never heard it before. I appreciated the art in this version a lot, I liked how they really tried to accurately portray costumes from that era.
