Well I don't have too much to say about this one.

It is a modern reimagining of A Christmas Carol. David doesn't really do much with the story aside from change Christmas to Valentine's Day and make the focus about being open to finding love again after losing someone. Ben's voice is quite similar to Ebeneezer's but it doesn't work in a modern setting. The whole thing felt a bit forced and didactic which made for a dull read. Those who haven't read the original may find this quick read okay but it didn't quite work for me. ( )

Sorry I think his writing is too self-aware. ( )

Good pre-teen read, but Levithan goes the Twilight movie route here: instead of writing it how it is, he goes out of his way to create equality-based characters. In Twilight's (non-book) case a collage of ethnicity, in this case a pandora's box of sexual preferences. All and all entertaining if you are a fan of A Christmas Carol, but I've read far more interesting books for this age group.

In this "remix" of Dickens's classic Christmas Carol, teenaged Ben must cope with his girlfriend's death by being visited by the spirits of love past, present, and future. The idea was clever, and it was fun picking out which characters were which from the original story, but the re-used dialogue was out of place, coming across as stilted and meaningless. If Levithan had either always had the characters speaking like Dickens or paraphrased the original lines, it would have been smoother. All the same, I enjoyed this short book, and the illustrations were nice. ( )

This was a wonderful little read. The story revolves around the life of a teenage boy, the death of his girlfriend, and the after-effects this has on himself, his friends and their possible futures. It offers a beautiful lesson similar to the original of Dickens'. I will keep this book and will probably search out the original "Christmas Story" to add as well. ( )
