Anne Hutchinson’s Way is about a woman, Anne, and her family coming from England to America because they are Puritans who want to be able to express their beliefs with others. After a very long journey to the new land, they arrive in Massachusetts Bay Colony where they meet her brother who has been there for a few months already. The whole reason for moving their family from England so that they can now share their beliefs with others and says that they are blessed with mouths and that we are to speak what we see as the truth. Anne has strong beliefs and when she was told by the Minister to stop her talks, she refused to give up in what she believed in. Anne was punished for a few months and when she was finally released, she moved her family away where they were finally at “home” and where she could continue her talks with the people around her. I think that this is a great book to read to children who are studying about this subject in social studies. I think this book will help them understand what people went through in that time period and the things they faced, and how different things are in todays world. ( )

"Anne Hutchinson's Way," by Jeannine Atkins, was about a family that was fleeing their puritan country of England heading to the new world. Once they arrived at the new world, the mother began having meetings and speaking as a preacher. Not all of her beliefs matched the minister's so she was punished. The families were trying to adjust to the ways of the colony, but things just didn't see right or fair. No matter what, not even the punishment could stop mama from doing her meetings and teaching her children what was right and what she believed. She was punished for several months. When she was released from the room she was locked him, mama took her family and moved away where she could share her beliefs. This can teach children to stand up for what they believe in and for what they think is right. This also is about religious beliefs. This can show children of different religions that its okay to believe in different things. Stand up for what you want to believe in, even if it is different from everyone else's beliefs, even your family's. ( )

In the book, “Anne Hutchinson’s Way,” young Susanna travels with her family from England to New York. Her family was trying to get to a place that they could practice religion how they wanted to. Anne was the mother of Susanna; she did not like the minister’s manners. The mother would hold pray meetings in her house. The minister was not happy with this. He had the mother thrown in jail because she was going against him. Susanna is so upset because she couldn’t see her mother. One day her father lives to build a new home for them in Massachusetts that way the mother can come with them. In the end, the whole family was back together. In the story, we see growth with Anne and Susanna. Anne is a strong woman who wants the freedom to do practice religion in her way. Throughout the story we see Anne go from being this strong woman to being weak because they arrested her and took her away from her family. At the end though when she gets out she is back to being strong for her children. Susanna is just a child, but she grows to be so strong. She is confused about why her parents have to move, and she is confused when her mother is arrested. In the end, though it made her stronger because she learned that life isn’t fair and she eventually got to be with her family again, and they lived happily ever after. The characters change the plot because when they take a risk, it makes the climax of the story. The characters change the story by making it more interesting. ( )

Anne Hutchinson, her husband, and ten children were a Puritan family who left England to settle in Massachusetts. Anne was a strong and spirited woman, especially for colonial times, because she preached to her community. She would preach within her own home and anyone was welcome. Because holding meetings was illegal for women she was locked away in a seperate prison for a winter. When spring finally came Anne was released from prison and reunited with her children. Soon after, she and her children followed her husband to a land outside of Massachusetts to start a new home. This book was really great. I would like to read it to students when studying significant historical women. After reading a researching a little on each particular historical woman, students could choose their "favorite" and develop a presentation about her. ( )

Anne Hutchinson refuses to back down to colony leaders who forbid her from preaching. When she is banished from the colony, her family must set out for a new homestead. An inspiring portrait of courage, though drably written and illustrated. ( )
