One day a very kind and good-hearted woodcutter saves the life of a deer from hunters. In exchange for what he did, the deer asks the woodcutter to wish for something he wants and he will make it true from him. The woodcut wishes for a wife and children and be happy in their lives. At the next night, the deer tells him that he will find five celestial maidens in a lake and he has to pick up on of them and steal one of the maiden's robes so she cannot return to heaven. The maiden falls in love with the woodcutter because of his kindness and they marry. When their first child arrives, the wife becomes homesick. However, the deer warns the woodcutter that he must not show the robe to his wife until they have their second child; but because he loves her wife so much, returns the robe to her. When the wife puts the robe on, she flies to the sky with her daughter. After realizing that he just loses his wife, he searches to find the deer again to help him to return his family. The woodcutter is able to go back with her wife and his daughter, but if he does that he would leave his mother. Because he decides to send his mother to heaven instead, the king of heaven sends for the kid man a dragon to bring him to the heaves with his whole family.
The illustration was beautiful and shows the heaven as a really gorgeous place. The theme in this fairy tale is that your kindness will always be give back to you, and sometimes we need to think about other instead of thinking just about ourselves. ( )

A kind woodcutter had saved the life of a deer. In return, the deer granted the woodcutter a wish, to b happily married with children. But he was too kind and his wife and child were sent back to heaven. But he was able to go back with them yet he would have had to leave his mother. In turn, he decided to send his mother to heaven. Because of his kindness, the king of heaven sent for him on a dragon were he was reunited with his entire family.

It is a story that has a moral of being kind to other and in return kindness will be given back. ( )

Part C/traditional literature

One day a good-hearted woodcutter saves a deer's life from hunters. In excahnge for saving her life, the deer grants the woodcutter's wish for a wife. At the next full moon, he finds five celestial maidens bathing in a lake. Following the deer's instructions, he steals one of the maiden's robes so she cannot return to heaven. Moved by the woodcutter's kindness, she falls in love with him and they marry. Soon their first child arrives. The wife soon becomes homesick. Failing to heed the deer's instructions of not showing the robe to his wife until the arrival of their second child, he returns the robe to her. She puts it on and flies to the sky with her daughter. Realizing that he just loses his wife, he goes to find the deer that he saved for help of reuniting with his family.

The illustrations are breathtakingly gorgeous. The target audience is ages 9-12. This story is similar to a Vietnamese fairy tale that I have enjoyed reading as a child. I like the theme of eternal love: the man goes to great length to be reunited with his wife. In addition, I like the positive message that it sends: all acts of kindness are returned.

In this delightfully illustrated book, a kindly woodcutter protects a deer from being killed, and discovers this deer is a friend of the Mountain Spirit. As a thank you, the magical deer grants the woodcutter his wish of having a wife and child. The woodcutter's kindness throughout the book holds him back from happiness as he puts others needs before his own, but ultimately he is rewarded for this. A charming, moralistic folktale.
